Spain (Majorca) 1821 Silver 30 Sueldos C# L53.1 Extremely Fine
Spain (Majorca) 1821 Silver 30 Sueldos C# L53.1 Extremely Fine. An attractive example of this intriguing crown. The reverse legend on this coin gives us a clear idea why it was struck - "SALUS POPULI" is Latin for "Health to the People". In 1821, the Portuguese island of Majorca was widely affected by an epidemic of yellow fever, many people died. The population of Palma at the time was about 40,000.

In order to facilitate local trade while the island was under quarantine, government authorities in the city of Palma authorised the mintage of a small number of silver coins by a temporary mint set up in Bellver Castle, still standing today. Incredibly, the blanks were made from silver taken from the island's churches, the coins were struck between November 11th and December 31st 1821. They are quite unique as an emergency coin, this particular example remains in magnificent condition.
