Constans was the third and youngest son of Constantine I and second wife Fausta. His brothers were Constantine II and Constantius II. His third brother was Crispus, the first son of Constantine I and his first wife, Minervina. He initially was a good general and won victory over the Sarmatian invasion in 337. He also had a successful campaign against the Franks in 343. The brothers were in continuous conflicts over territory. Constans tolerated Judaism and banned pagan worship. He fought against Arianism and Donatism and supported the Nicene Creed.

He later became cruel and a poor ruler and his soldiers objected to his homosexuality. In 350, while fleeing from Magnentius, he was killed in Gaul while seeking sanctuary in a temple.
