This medallion was minted at a small mint operated by Harold Whitley in Darby, Montana in 1983. As near as we can tell these rounds did not travel much beyond the state borders. A fun fact about Harold Whitley, is that he often bought up Engelhard rounds, both silver and gold, and used their metals to create his own coins. He was well known within the borders of the state of Montana, but once you move outside the state, his name is little known. Obverse has an eagle facing left, with the inscription "AMERICAN EAGLE" above and "WHITLEY MINT" below, the reverse has 1/2 oz.
